The vast majority of animals except strictly carnivorous or herbivorous have as part of their diet insects, in some species such as finches or parrots it can stimulate breeding, increase fertility or avoid the death of chicks as the extra protein and fat signals to the birds that there is enough high quality food sources to raise their young. In other cases birds won't breed at all if it is not available to them.
In chickens studies have shown that just 100 g of live insects per chicken/week can increase the eggs' weight, size, taste and color of the yolk. It also drastically improve their immune system and gut flora, after all this is what backyard chicken are constantly searching for in the soil.. bugs and worms!
